Officer say that on May 30, they responded to a call of stolen Toyota Land Cruiser. They located the vehicle speeding near Fifth Avenue North at Broad Street just before the afternoon rush hour. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but it sped away, prompting a short-lived chase that was called off by a supervisor for the safety of officers and others. In an effort to escape the driver of the SUV struck a tree before running over the little girl who was walking with her mother. The SUV never stopped and cut through a nearby park to make it’s escape. Police found the vehicle abandoned a short time later near Mercer Street and Yale Avenue.
