Troopers Crack Down On Unsafe Drivers Near Big Rigs
October 11, 2011
Washington State Troopers began a series of operations this morning to target vehicles that are driving unsafely around tractor-trailers. According to KOMO News, the crackdown comes in the wake of a Lynwood, Washington, accident last Monday in which a tractor-trailer struck and dragged a car 200 yards.
Last time officers emphasized safe driving near the big rigs, troopers stated they ticketed more than 100 drivers in less than four hours. Today’s efforts were off to a strong start with Washington State Patrol spokesperson, Seargant Kirk Rudeen, already having pulled over a vehicle for following a semi too closely.
Although many feel the troopers are trying to pull in revenue with the tickets, they say their message is simple; they just want drivers to be safe.
Seargant Rudeen says the best way to avoid an accident with a commercial truck is to always obey the two-second rule. This means allowing two seconds between yourself and the vehicle you are following. Another simple rule to follow is: If you cant see the truckers mirrors they can’t see you.
