Driver Involved In Black Diamond Hit-And-Run Captured

October 19, 2011

The suspect in a Black Diamond, Washington, hit-and-run case has been captured and charged with a felony after taking his damaged vehicle to a local dealership. According to The Reporter, Black diamond Police arrested the 23-year-old driver at 11:30 in the morning Tuesday at his place of business after a tip from a dealership employee.

Last Friday, it was reported that a car on 288th Street had hit a 65-year-old female cyclist. It was determined that the vehicle, a Kia Forte, had struck the woman from behind, and thrown her into the side of the vehicle. The woman hit the side mirror of the car, breaking it off. The impact was enough to crack the woman’s helmet. The vehicle fled the scene, leaving the cyclist injured on the side of the road.

On Tuesday, an employee at a local Kia dealership noticed that a Forte matching the description and damage of the hit-and-run vehicle was in the repair shop. The dealership called police who came out and inspected the vehicle, and subsequently went to place him under arrest. When asked about the accident, the driver said he thought he hit some mailboxes and was apologetic. Investigators say the driver had a suspended license at the time of the crash.

The Washington Auto Accident Attorney with the Defoe Pickett Law Office would like your opinion on the case. What kind of punishment should this driver face for his part in the crash? Tell us what you think on our Facebook page.

Troopers Crack Down On Unsafe Drivers Near Big Rigs

October 11, 2011

Washington State Troopers began a series of operations this morning to target vehicles that are driving unsafely around tractor-trailers. According to KOMO News, the crackdown comes in the wake of a Lynwood, Washington, accident last Monday in which a tractor-trailer struck and dragged a car 200 yards.

Last time officers emphasized safe driving near the big rigs, troopers stated they ticketed more than 100 drivers in less than four hours. Today’s efforts were off to a strong start with Washington State Patrol spokesperson, Seargant Kirk Rudeen, already having pulled over a vehicle for following a semi too closely.

Although many feel the troopers are trying to pull in revenue with the tickets, they say their message is simple; they just want drivers to be safe.

Seargant Rudeen says the best way to avoid an accident with a commercial truck is to always obey the two-second rule. This means allowing two seconds between yourself and the vehicle you are following. Another simple rule to follow is: If you cant see the truckers mirrors they can’t see you.

The Washington Auto Accident Attorneys with the Defoe Pickett Law Firm often handle cases where a collision between a tractor-trailer and car or truck has occurred. They urge victims involved in these collisions to contact them for a free evaluation.

Motorcycle Driver Dies in Kennewick Crash

October 5, 2011

A Kennewick, Washington, man is dead after he crashed his motorcycle in the early this morning. KNDO News reports that the 27-year-old driver hit a curb at the corner of Kellogg Street and Creekstone Drive around 2:45 AM.

Authorities believe the man was driving his red street bike at “excessive speeds” when he crashed. Kennewick Police Department spokesperson, Mike Blatman, stated, “Officers got there within a couple of moments and they discovered a motorcycle laying on it’s side. The motorcycle had struck the curb and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle.” The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. By sunrise, family members and friends surrounded the crash site to pay respects.

Police cannot confirm, pending toxicology and autopsy results, whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), almost 60 percent of fatal single-car crashes on motorcycles occur at night, and 35 percent of deceased motorcycle riders were speeding at the time. Also, half of all motorcycle fatalities occur in crashes where the driver failed to properly maneuver a curb.

The Washington Auto Accident Attorneys with the Defoe Pickett Law Firm would like to ask that all motorcycle riders better protect themselves and others by slowing down and always wearing a helmet. Following these simple tips could save your life, or the life of another.

Hit-and-run Makes Parents Question Bus Stop Safety

September 28, 2011

The death of an 11-year-old Wapato Middle School student caused by a hit-and-run accident at a bus stop has prompted educators and parents to make changes that will ensure a tragedy like this will not happen again.

According to KNDO News, the boy was crossing the street at Yakima Valley Highway and West Parker Heights Road early Friday afternoon. The boy’s father was waiting to pick him up at the stop and was watching as a truck approached his son. “When he started running toward me, there was nothing I could do,” the father said. “I saw the car but I couldn’t say anything, and the car hit him.” Witnesses say the light grey or silver pickup stopped after the crash, but moments later fled the scene.

Superintendent Becky Imler stated, “Safety is always a paramount goal of Wapato Public Schools no matter what the issue is, and this is a very tragic situation.” Her response, thus far, has been to place staff at the dangerous stop to help the children cross, and to evaluate the stop itself for what changes could be made. Imler added, “We do take this very seriously.”

Washington Crash Kills One And Injures Two Senior Citizens

King 5 News reports that the women had just wrapped up a lunch date moments before the crash.
The women were riding together in a Honda Accord when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a pole in the parking lot. Witnesses say the lights in the nearby building shook when the collision occurred. One female witness reports, “We just heard a loud bang. You could see the lights shaking. Sounded like something hit the building….It really breaks my heart.” Airbags deployed, which may have played a part in the death of the front seat passenger. The driver and the other passenger were listed in critical condition following the crash.
